THIS HANGING TOWEL TUTORIAL MAKES THE PERFECT ADDITION TO YOUR KITCHEN OR EVEN AS A GIFT FOR A FRIEND

supplies you will need:

  • You will need a kitchen hand towel.
  • Coordinating Fabric
  • Paper, Pen, Scissors
  • Sewing Pins
  • Thread
  • Sewing Machine
  • A Cute Button
  • Iron and Ironing Board
  • Needle for Sewing Button
  • Optional: Velcro (see tutorial below)

Making your pattern for the hanging towel

I like to make my own patterns as you are able to customize them to your liking. I start by laying the towel flat on the table. Then grab your piece of paper and pen and lay it next to the top of the towel.

Now I draw out the hanging part of hanging towel. I start by placing a few dots in the shape I want the hanging part look like. Then when I am satisfied with the shape, I connect the dots. Make sure you have a long strip at the top that will be used to fold over your oven door or dishwasher handle.

Once you are happy with the shape, it is time to cut out your pattern.

Next it is time to cut out your fabric for the hanging towel

Take your fabric and lay it on your table. Make sure that the fabric is folded in half as you want to cut out 2 pieces, exactly the same.

Once your fabric is laid out on the table, take your pattern and pin it to your fabric. Make sure when you are cutting out your pattern that it is secure and will not move around.

Cut out carefully. Unpin and there should be two identical pieces.

Take your two pieces of fabric and place them together with the colored sides together. Pin them together. Sew them together, leaving the part that fits the towel open. Essentially leaving the bottom piece open. Unpin and turn them right side out.

Take the opening and fold about 1/4 inch of the fabric into the opening. Take your iron and iron it so it stays put. Iron around the border of the hanger. (See photo below)

Putting it all together

Take your hand towel and fold it in half length wise. Essentially, your one towel will make two hanging towels.

Cut your towel into 2 pieces. The photo below shows the towel after I have cut it in half.

Now, insert the folded towel into the opening of the holder and pin really well. Sew the 2 pieces together and now you have the holder attached to the towel.

Adding the button to the hanging towel

Next, it is time to attach the button and you have a few options. You can attach the button the traditional way and cut out a button hole. Click here to watch a tutorial.

I did something different this time. I had some left over Velcro that I needed to use up. So, instead of bothering with cutting out a button hole. I attached some Velcro onto the inside and hand sewed it so I can open and close the hanging towel and it will stay put. Both ways are equally effective, it is all about preference.
